Canadian Wildfires, Ecocide, and the Real Wealth You Are Losing
I want to start with something small and personal, because that is where this actually lives.
You walked outside one morning this summer and the sun looked wrong. Orange, flat, like somebody put a filter on the sky. Maybe you checked your phone and saw an air quality alert, kept the kids inside, and went on with your day. That is how a catastrophe arrives in your life now, as a mild inconvenience with a push notification attached.
I have been thinking about that gap for a long time. The gap between how enormous a thing actually is and how small it feels when it reaches you. Canadian wildfire smoke has now crossed the border and settled over American cities for three summers running. And most of us have quietly filed it under weather.
It is not weather. It is an economy showing you its books.
Three Summers, One Pattern
Let me give you the actual numbers.
In 2023, Canada had the worst fire season in its recorded history. Roughly 15 million hectares burned, which shattered the previous record of 7.6 million hectares set in 1989. That is not a bad year. That is doubling an all-time record.
Then 2024 came in around 5.4 million hectares, one of the six worst years in the previous half century. Then 2025 burned about 8.3 million hectares and became the second-worst season on record, forcing roughly 85,000 people from their homes. And this year, 2026, started slow and then detonated. By mid-August, Canada had recorded 4,793 fires and 4.1 million hectares burned, already above the long-term average, with the season not finished.
Here is the detail from 2026 that should stop you cold. Roughly 94 percent of everything that burned this year did so in the five weeks between the end of June and the end of July. Not a season. A month.
The ten-year average is around 3.8 million hectares a year. We have now spent four consecutive years at or far above that number. When a record gets broken once, that is an event. When the record gets broken and then the following years keep clustering near the new ceiling, that is not an event anymore. That is the new floor.
What Died, and Why Nobody Can Give You a Number
You are going to want a wildlife death toll, and I have to be honest with you: nobody has one, and anybody who hands you a confident figure is guessing.
Here is what we do know. The North American boreal forest is called North America's bird nursery, and the name is earned. Between one and three billion birds fly north into that forest every spring to breed. By fall, three to five billion birds leave it, adults plus that year's young. More than 300 species regularly nest there. For roughly 35 species, over 80 percent of their entire Western Hemisphere breeding population is in the boreal.
The fires burn during nesting season. Nestlings cannot fly. Eggs cannot run. The scientists who study this are careful to say we cannot count the individual dead, and they are right to be careful. But you can do the arithmetic on what it means when millions of hectares of active nesting habitat burn in a five-week window.
The boreal is also home to about 85 species of mammals, 130 species of fish, and hundreds of bird species. After the 2023 fires, Indigenous hunters in Quebec walked their ancestral lands looking for moose tracks and described what they found as a desert. No droppings, no tracks, no nests.
Woodland caribou are the sharpest example of why "the forest grows back" is not the comfort people think it is. Caribou depend on old-growth forest and the slow-growing lichen that only mature stands produce. That lichen takes many decades to recover after a burn. When fires come more often than the forest can regrow, the habitat never returns to the stage caribou need. The forest comes back. The caribou range does not.
Fire is natural in the boreal. It always has been. Black-backed woodpeckers thrive in burned stands, jack pine cones need heat to release seed, and Indigenous nations practiced cultural burning for generations to shape a healthy mosaic. What is happening now is different in frequency, intensity, and scale. An ecosystem adapted to a rhythm is being handed a drumbeat.
The Deaths We Can Actually Count
Now the part that we can measure, and it is worse than you think.
A study published in the journal Nature examined the smoke from Canada's 2023 season alone. It found that the smoke exposed roughly 354 million people to polluted air across North America, Europe, and Asia. It estimated about 5,400 acute deaths, meaning people who died during or immediately after heavy smoke days, and roughly 82,100 premature deaths worldwide from sustained exposure over the months that followed.
Of those premature deaths, an estimated 33,000 were in the United States. About 8,300 were in Canada. Another 22,400 were estimated in Europe, from smoke that crossed the Atlantic.
Sit with the American figure. Thirty-three thousand. One fire season, in another country, associated with more American deaths than most of the events we hold national moments of silence for. There was no siren. There was an air quality alert on your phone.
One of the study's co-authors, Michael Brauer at the University of British Columbia, described the chronic effect plainly as accelerated dying. Wildfire smoke carries PM2.5, fine particulate matter small enough to pass deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. It does not usually kill a healthy adult outright. It shortens the lives of people who already have heart disease, lung disease, asthma, or diabetes. It stacks onto the vulnerabilities people already carry.
The short-term effects are documented too. The CDC found that during the 19 days in 2023 when smoke pushed American air into unhealthy ranges, asthma-related emergency room visits ran 17 percent above what would normally be expected.
And this year, in July 2026, more than 120 million people across the Midwest and Northeast were under dangerous air quality alerts, stretching from Minnesota to New Hampshire. That is more than a third of the country breathing air that public health agencies told them was unsafe, because of fires burning a thousand miles away.
The Loop That Feeds Itself
Here is the mechanism that makes this an economic story and not just an environmental one.
Researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory measured the carbon released by the 2023 Canadian fires using satellite observations. The answer was 647 million metric tons of carbon over five months. That is more than four times Canada's entire annual fossil fuel output. If those fires had been a country, they would have ranked as the fourth-largest emitter on Earth, behind only China, the United States, and India.
Typical Canadian forest fire emissions over the previous decade ranged from about 29 to 121 megatonnes. So 2023 was not a bad year on a curve. It was a different order of magnitude.
Now here is the trap. Every national climate plan on the planet assumes forests are carbon sinks, absorbing more than they release. Canada's boreal has historically done exactly that, and it stores more carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem type on Earth. Those absorption assumptions are baked into the emissions budgets countries use to claim they are on track.
When the forest burns at this scale, it flips from sink to source. And wildfire emissions are generally not counted in the national tallies that countries submit toward their Paris Agreement targets. So the atmosphere gets the carbon, the warming gets worse, the fire weather gets worse, and the ledger never records it.
Hotter and drier conditions cause bigger fires. Bigger fires release more carbon. More carbon causes hotter and drier conditions. That is a self-reinforcing loop, and we built it.
Is This a Crime? The Serious Legal Answer
You have probably had the thought that somebody should be in handcuffs. I want to take that instinct seriously rather than treat it as a slogan, because there is a real body of law forming around exactly that question.
The word is ecocide. The working legal definition, drafted by an independent expert panel in 2021, is unlawful or wanton acts committed with knowledge that there is a substantial likelihood of severe and either widespread or long-term damage to the environment.
In September 2024, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Samoa formally submitted a proposal to amend the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to add ecocide as a fifth international crime, alongside genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. Vanuatu first raised it at the ICC in 2019. The proposal is now in front of the Assembly of States Parties.
Then in July 2025, the International Court of Justice delivered an advisory opinion on state obligations regarding climate change. The court held that failure by a state to take appropriate action to protect the climate system, including through fossil fuel production, consumption, licensing, or subsidies, may constitute an internationally wrongful act. It affirmed that the 1.5 degree target carries binding force under the Paris Agreement, and it opened the door to reparations where a sufficiently direct causal link can be shown.
I have to be straight with you about where this stands. Ecocide is not yet a crime under the Rome Statute. The amendment process is slow and it is political. The ICJ opinion is advisory, not directly enforceable. Europe has moved furthest, with a 2024 EU directive creating qualified environmental offenses and a Council of Europe convention that still needs ten ratifications to take effect.
So no, nobody is getting arrested this year. But the legal architecture is being poured, and the ICJ language about fossil fuel licensing and subsidies is a much sharper instrument than most people realize.
The Chain of Causation Is No Longer Vague
The reason "criminal" is starting to sound less like rhetoric and more like a legal category is attribution science. We can now trace specific weather to specific warming with real statistical rigor.
World Weather Attribution published its analysis of the 2026 Canadian season in August. In Ontario, where the fires exploded in July, the seven-day extreme fire weather event has a fifteen-year return period in today's climate, and it was made roughly 3.5 times more likely by 1.4 degrees of global warming. The thirty-day measure was made roughly eight times more likely in the observational record.
The Northwest Territories finding is starker. The seven-day and thirty-day fire weather events observed there in July 2026 now have return periods of two and six years. In a climate 1.4 degrees cooler, those same events would have had return periods of 50 and 100 years.
Read that again. Something that used to happen roughly once a century now happens about every six years.
On the other end of the chain, the Carbon Majors database traces the world's fossil fuel and cement production back to specific producers. It found that 80 percent of global emissions from 2016 through 2022 can be traced to just 57 corporate and state producing entities. In 2023 alone, more than half of tracked emissions came from 36 companies.
I want to be accurate rather than convenient here, because accuracy is the whole point. In that 2016 to 2022 window, nation-state producers accounted for 38 percent, state-owned entities 37 percent, and investor-owned companies 25 percent. So this is not a story about five American CEOs. It is a story about a small, identifiable set of state and corporate producers who expanded output after signing an agreement to reduce it. Most of them did expand. That expansion was a decision, made with full knowledge, by people whose names are on annual reports.
That is the shape of the ecocide argument. Not that fire is a crime. That knowingly and profitably expanding the conditions that produce fire, while the science is sitting on your desk, might be.
Who Gets Richer While You Breathe It
Now for the part that makes this a Nouveau Economics post rather than a science post.
While Canada burned this summer, the largest oil companies posted another strong quarter. Shell reported profit of $9.84 billion for the three months ending in June 2026, more than double the same period a year earlier. TotalEnergies reported adjusted net income of $5.4 billion for the quarter. The smoke and the earnings call happened in the same news cycle.
That is not a coincidence and it is not a conspiracy. It is just how the accounting works. The revenue from selling the fuel lands on one balance sheet. The 33,000 premature American deaths, the evacuated First Nations communities, the burned caribou range, and the lost carbon sink land on nobody's balance sheet at all.
Then look at the second layer, which is where the money really moves. Insurers have been retreating from wildfire-exposed markets, raising premiums, and issuing non-renewals. After the Lahaina fire in 2023, non-renewal rates in Hawaii rose by 200 percent. California's FAIR Plan, the state's insurer of last resort, absorbed billions in losses after the January 2025 Los Angeles fires and sought a major rate increase.
Meanwhile, many of the same insurance companies underwrite and invest in fossil fuel expansion. They collect premiums from you, finance the industry driving the risk, raise your rates when the risk materializes, and then hand the uninsurable remainder to a state-backed pool funded by taxpayers. Advocates call the practice of pulling coverage from climate-exposed communities bluelining, and it lands hardest on the people with the least ability to move.
There is a third layer, quieter and more insidious. Clean air is becoming a consumer product. Air purifiers, HEPA filters, whole-home filtration, sealed windows, private generators. Every one of those is a market opportunity created by the destruction of something that used to be free. When a commons collapses, somebody sells you a private substitute for it. That is a transfer of wealth from you to them, and GDP records it as growth.
That is the punchline nobody wants to say out loud. Under our current accounting, the fire is good for the economy. It generates firefighting contracts, construction, insurance activity, medical spending, and filtration sales. The burned forest, the dead birds, the shortened lives, and the vanished sink are recorded as exactly zero.
Real Wealth Is the Thing You Cannot Buy Back
This is the accounting error at the center of everything I write about, so let me put it plainly.
In 1997, Robert Costanza and a team of colleagues published a landmark paper in Nature estimating the annual value of the world's ecosystem services at around $33 trillion, with a range of $16 to $54 trillion. Global GNP at the time was about $18 trillion. Nature was doing nearly twice as much work for the human economy as the entire human economy was doing for itself. In a 2014 update, Costanza's team put the figure around $125 trillion a year in 2007 dollars.
That value does not appear in GDP. It does not appear on any corporate balance sheet. It is treated as free, infinite, and outside the system. Costanza and Herman Daly founded the field of ecological economics on a simple correction to that mistake: the economy is not the container. The economy sits inside society, and society sits inside a finite biosphere.
Now apply that to the boreal. That forest holds more surface freshwater than any other forest ecosystem on the planet. It stores more carbon per unit area than any other terrestrial ecosystem type. It runs the water cycle for a continent. It is the breeding ground for a third of North America's landbirds.
That is real wealth. Not a metaphor. An actual productive asset generating actual services that you and I consume every single day without paying for them.
Your net worth means nothing if the air is unbreathable for three weeks a year. Your portfolio does not filter particulates. The wealthiest person alive still has to breathe the same PM2.5 as your grandmother with COPD, and the difference is only that he can afford to leave for a while and she cannot.
So when I say we are getting poorer, I am not being poetic. We are liquidating a capital asset and booking the liquidation as income. Any accountant who did that to a company would go to prison. We do it to a continent and call it a strong quarter.
Ecological Economic Justice, and Where King Left Off
Here is where I have to name who is actually paying.
In Canada's 2025 season, roughly 85,000 people were evacuated. About 45,000 of them were First Nations residents. That is more than half the displaced population drawn from communities that make up a small fraction of the country. This year, the Canadian Armed Forces evacuated Eabametoong First Nation in northwestern Ontario in July.
World Weather Attribution's own analysis names this directly. Indigenous communities are overrepresented in wildfire areas. Remote locations and limited road access make evacuation harder. Repeated displacement disrupts hunting grounds, traditional foods, and cultural practice. And successive fire seasons mean there is no recovery window between disasters, so the damage compounds.
This is the oldest pattern in environmental economics. The people who consumed the least of the product bear the most of its cost. That is what makes it a justice question rather than a management question.
Dr. King saw this connection before we had the vocabulary for it. The Memphis strike he died supporting began after two sanitation workers, Echol Cole and Robert Walker, were crushed to death in a garbage truck. That was a workplace safety fight, a labor fight, and an environmental fight, and the men on that line did not experience them as three separate things.
In his 1967 Beyond Vietnam speech, King named racism, extreme materialism, and militarism as linked, and he argued that charity alone was insufficient because, in his words, an edifice which produces beggars needs restructuring. The Poor People's Campaign was his attempt to move from civil rights to economic rights.
The line continued after him. In 1982, residents of Warren County, North Carolina, lay down in the road to block trucks carrying PCB-contaminated soil into their community. Over 500 people were arrested. Benjamin Chavis, a civil rights organizer, gave the pattern its name: environmental racism. The 1987 United Church of Christ report Toxic Wastes and Race in the United States gave it the data.
Ecological economic justice is the next segment of that same road. It says the environment is not a cause that sits beside economic justice. It is the balance sheet that economic justice was always arguing about.
What This Would Actually Require
I do not want to hand you outrage with no exit. So here is what a real framework looks like, and every piece of it already exists somewhere in draft or in practice.
Put natural capital on the books. Ecosystem services are measurable. Countries already publish natural capital accounts. Make them mandatory and let the loss of a carbon sink show up as a negative on a national ledger instead of vanishing.
Count wildfire emissions in carbon budgets. Right now nations get to assume forest absorption they are no longer receiving. The Nature study on the 2023 fires said explicitly that reduced sequestration by ecosystems has to be compensated for by adjusting emissions reductions elsewhere. Do the math honestly.
Make the polluter pay, using attribution science. Vermont and New York have passed climate superfund laws. Hawaii and California have pushed bills to let the state or insurers recover disaster costs from fossil fuel producers. In December 2025, Washington homeowners sued oil and gas companies over insurance premium increases. These are early, and some have already stalled in committee. They are still the right instrument.
Finish the ecocide amendment. Give the causal chain a legal home so that the decision to expand production with full knowledge of the consequences carries the weight it deserves.
Fund Indigenous fire stewardship and give it authority, not just consultation. Cultural burning shaped the boreal mosaic for generations before suppression policy replaced it. The communities being evacuated first hold the knowledge that reduces the fuel load.
Stop counting destruction as growth. As long as the fire raises GDP, the system will keep telling us we are doing great while we get measurably poorer.
What You Can Do With This
I am not going to tell you that recycling fixes this, because it does not and you know it.
What I will tell you is that the most useful thing you can do is refuse the frame. When somebody calls this a bad fire year, you now know it is the fourth consecutive one. When somebody calls the smoke an act of nature, you know the Northwest Territories went from a hundred-year event to a six-year event. When somebody says holding producers accountable would hurt the economy, you know the economy already absorbed 33,000 American deaths in a single season and recorded them as nothing.
Vote on it locally, because climate superfund bills and insurance backstops are being fought out in statehouses right now, not in Washington. Ask where your pension and your bank put their money. Support Indigenous-led land protection, since it is currently the most effective conservation mechanism on the continent. And talk about it in economic terms, because that is the language the people making these decisions actually respond to.
The air over your house this summer was a bill. Somebody sold the product, somebody else booked the profit, and you paid.

The fire is going to come back next summer. The question is whether we finally have the accounting to name what it costs.
